There is an evil spirit that comes from the Lord. There is an evil spirit that comes from man. God’s evil spirit comes as a result of men desiring evil, like in Saul.
7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:
1 Sam 16:14
14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.
48 He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts. 49 He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.
14 The LORD hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit.
II Th 2:11-12
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
3 And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them:
13 Arise, O Lord, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword: 14 From men which are thy hand, O Lord, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes. 15 As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.
HOW DID THE LUNATIC GO MAD?
God sent madness to Israel through their rulers. Since the Priesthood turned from Gods truth, they left no room for God to heal and bring sound judgment. The people in turn were smitten with the curse of God on them. Legion was mad because of a land God forsaken and cursed by unclean spirits that had caused him to be mad.
Words describing Mad are: Crazy, demented, deranged, insane, lunatic, angry, enraged, furious, infuriated, and irate. These are the description of a God forsaken society.
Legion was full of unclean spirits produced by unbridled thought. A fallacious government and priesthood who would not keep the commandments of God, who had corrupted itself through tradition and iniquity in heart was responsible for the condition of the land.
2 Chr 7:13-15
13 If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people; 14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 15 Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place.
This scripture is plain. God will send the devourer and pestilence among the people for their turning away from hearing his voice and obeying his commandments. The reason for this is the same reason God destroyed the earth with the flood. All spirits start with a wrong attitude toward God. Evil thoughts could not predominate in a man’s mind and remain there continually if God were in his thoughts. The way to keep unclean spirits out of the mind is to eat the thoughts of God and not contrary and evil thoughts that are produced from the heart. Mark 7:21 The Pastor of the church is a watchman to see that evil thought does not take over the minds of those in the church.
4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.
5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
28 The LORD shall smite thee with madness, and blindness, and astonishment of heart:
24 Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;
25 That frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;
7 Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD's hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.
Through the false church he will cause the nations to go insane. When men cannot hear truth, when they have forsaken the truth, no longer can they have a sound mind. False religion that cannot put a man on the truth will cause him to have obscured judgment. The curse of God is on them who turn from the truth.
7 The days of visitation are come, the days of recompense are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred.
WHO IS THE SERPENT? THE OLD SERPENT?
1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
The serpent is the evil thought from the heart. When a man listens to his thought above Gods thoughts he becomes evil in that he does that which is contrary to the will of God.
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
Here is the connecting verse that illustrates the difference between the serpent and the beasts of the field. Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field. Why? The very verse itself implies that the serpent was not one of the beasts of the field. This verse in James compares the beast of the field with the tongue. The tongue is human but it is as a serpent full of deadly poison. The thoughts of Eve were more subtle than any beast of the field. The serpent spoken of by Moses was the deadly and subtle thought that came from Eve's mind. She first ate of her false thoughts that opposed and contradicted Gods word. Then she gave her thoughts she had taken to Adam by speaking to him with her voice. Adam accepted the idea of Eve and knowingly disobeyed God to have sexual relations with Eve. Was this sin? Yes! God had joined them together in espousal not to be consummated until the time set by God. Espousal was a standard in Israel passed down from the beginning. Mary was espoused to Joseph. We are espoused to one husband even unto Christ. What made it sin was that they fell to lust and Cain was conceived out of lust and not the love relationship God had approved of.
The serpent was produced out of Eve's heart by her observing and questioning the truth she had been given. The serpent was produced by the lust of the eyes, flesh and pride of life. The sexual relationship looked good. One that would enhance knowledge and make one wiser. The pride of life was that surely they would not die for such an action. After disobeying they sewed fig leaves together to cover their private parts because they became ashamed of their sin. They did not eat an apple and cover their midsection. Cain was a product of this sin. The serpent is the spirit produced by questions and thoughts that challenge God and his truth through observations and natural assumption. The serpent was not literal. The serpent was not some half made animal walking on two or four legs. The serpent was the spirit produced by carnal thought. This spirit in man was cursed by God to go upon the belly that produced it. The belly is the heart. For out of your belly shall flow rivers of living waters, this spake he of the spirit which was not yet given. God here was speaking of the heart.
8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
Jesus Christ became sin for us and he showed us the way of salvation was through the cross. The natural cross is not the victory, but the spiritual cross in that we are to crucify the old man as Jesus was crucified. The serpent was not put on a pole as a type of Christ mistakenly. The serpent was a type of our old man which would have to be crucified. Adams nature was what caused sin to enter upon us. Adams nature is in each of us. In order for us to have victory we must see that Adams nature is crucified spiritually. Not on a cross literally, but spiritually.
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
2 Cor 5:21
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
The serpent spirit is the old man which must be destroyed for us to have victory in Jesus Christ.
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
ARE WE SURE THE SERPENT IS THE EVIL SPIRIT IN MAN?
Here are the scriptures that support the carnal mind being the serpent and old man.
3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies. 4 Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear; 5 Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.
David knew the truth and proclaimed the spiritual things with the things literally made.
1 Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man; 2 Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war. 3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. Selah. 4 Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.
11 Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.
The babbler is as a serpent.
2 Cor 11:3
3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
By listening to false doctrines and evil men. Men who were trying to take them back under the law. We are under the law of the Spirit of God. The law of the spirit will not permit us to serve God and knowingly allow fornication to continue in our midst. Men who cannot understand the types and allegories of the scripture. The anointing is taken away when we lose sight of our spiritual goals. Spiritual works and not the literal works of the law are what we must maintain in Christ. Prayer, repentance, confession, sincerity etc.....
9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
The serpent is full grown here. The serpent that started in Eve has now become full grown through the apostates that left the Apostolic doctrine and fought against the apostles and preachers of the N.T. church. These false teachers and Apostles gave themselves to the carnal nature and not to truth in the same way the serpent appeared to in Eve. The serpent is that spirit which questions and contradicts truth. The serpent appeared in the time of the Lord just before the N.T. church appeared at Pentecost. These are the spirits that were against the spiritual church born at Pentecost.
33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? 34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
Here Jesus prophesied of the old serpent called the devil drawing away the third part of the stars of heaven spoken of John in the 12th chapter of the book of revelation. These serpent spirits would challenge, question and attempt to draw men back unto the law changing the truth of God into a lie, to worship and serve the creature more than the creator.
9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Paul and the Apostles cast out the false prophets from the church only for them to continue with another Gospel. The devil changes truth. The carnal mind is the god of this world and the false prophets that changed the truth were the serpents.
In simple summary: The devil is the spirit in men who have changed the truth and chosen another gospel. The devil is not an entity or person or angel cast out of Gods abode. He is the spirit in the false church and prophets who oppose the truth of the living God. These false Apostles have drawn men away from N.T. truth.
THE PROMISE TO THE CHURCH WHO REMAINS AND BELIEVES TRUTH
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
4 My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.
1 Pet 5:8
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Peter spoke of the lion, having received his understanding from the prophets of old. He read the writings of David and had the revelation of who the devil was. The devil were those of the concision who roared against those who had revelation beyond the literal. The concision could not accept the fact that God had done away with their natural observances and rituals for the spiritual revelation. Circumcision was of the heart and not literal. The feasts were spiritual feasts now that Jesus Christ had come and fulfilled the meaning of the types. The Lamb, the light, the bread, the wine, the incense, the tabernacle articles and all. Peter was speaking about the Jews who were against the revealed truth in Jesus Christ endeavoring to bring back the converts back into the bondage of the law. Here are the revelations of David recorded in Psalms.
4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. 5 His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them. 6 He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity. 7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.
8 He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor. 9 He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net.
9 From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about. 10 They are enclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly. 11 They have now compassed us in our steps: they have set their eyes bowing down to the earth; 12 Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.
12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. 13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. 16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have enclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
Here is the picture of the crucifixion. When the roman soldiers and the chief priests of Israel gaped upon him with their mouths. Here is the roaring lion of 1Peter 5:8. Men who were against the truth of God using the Old Testament law to devour New Testament revelation. The literalist Jew saying Jesus profaned the temple when he spoke of destroying the temple. Of being a man and making himself God. These same men crucified him and persecuted the church. These same men were the roaring lions
Peter wrote about.
15 As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor people.
Here is the scripture that furnishes part of Peter’s terminology. The writer of Proverbs says a wicked ruler is as a roaring lion over the people. Those who do not know the truth of God will be devoured by the ruling religious element in that area. The word of God must be known or else the people will be destroyed for lack of knowledge. For a lack of knowledge my people parish. The wicked use the word of God and their governmental influence to change the people to what they want them to believe. The same way Nebuchadnezzar set up a god and commanded all to worship it. He was as a roaring lion to the three Hebrew. Saul of Tarsus was as a roaring lion to Gods New Testament church before his conversion.
1 Peter 5:8 was not talking about a spirit individual in the air. He was talking about Satan as the spirits in wicked rulers such as the Jewish Pharisees and Sadducees that opposed the truth of God. These rulers walked about seeking whom they could devour with their doctrine. Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees was the warning of the Lord Jesus.
RIGHTLY DIVIDING THE WORD OF TRUTH
2 Tim 2:15
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
20 And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God? 21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
THE FIRST MEASURE
14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
THE SECOND MEASURE
13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
John introduced Christ Jesus......this was the last phase of law before the church.
THE THIRD MEASURE
14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. 9 Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.
There is clearly three changes of administration:
1. From Adam until Moses
2. Form Moses law until John introduced Christ which was the end of the law.
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Also the fulfilling of the law:
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
3. From the first coming of Jesus Christ to the second coming of Jesus Christ at the end of the age.
The old man was not mentioned in either of the first two measures or parts here mentioned. The old man was not mentioned until the third or final part which was from John until the coming of the Lord Jesus. Simply because the Lord was not ready to reveal in the Old Testament or first two parts. In the Old Testament he gave the types and shadows of the thing he wanted to destroy. Moses having received understanding of the creatures being types of the spirit in man revealed the enemy in the Garden of Eden was the serpent. When men do not understand this simple principal in the scripture they leave the truth for their own understanding. God made with the ability to reason and make a choice of right or wrong. He made the animals without this ability, they must simple serve their nature. If man therefore chooses to serve himself he becomes as one of the creatures of God. If man chooses his own thoughts and refuses Gods thoughts, this is serving the creature and not the creator. The law revealed the sin of the creature and the things God would not tolerate. An animal cannot do the commandments of God because it cannot reason but man who can reason can chose to refuse God and serve his own nature. So Moses in the first part revealed the reason for Adams downfall was the serpent of the thoughts and the speaking of those thoughts to Adam by Eve. The types begin in Cain and Abel. Cain the first born or the type of the creature nature. Abel the type of the second born or the Christ nature. These types continue in Ishmael and Isaac. Ishmael the type of those under law born of flesh. Abraham having relations with the bond woman Hagar which is a type of the law. Isaac the child of promise was the second born which in type is the New Testament saint who has received the promise of the Holy Ghost. Esau and Jacob: Esau the firstborn a type of the flesh nature. Jacob the second born a type of the New Testament saint who with two natures prevails to dominate the base nature and win Christ.
Israel was a type of the New Testament church. In order for the church to become fully mature and do the work of God it must leave its old men and women in the wilderness, saving those who had faith in God. Joshua and Caleb were the only ones allowed into the land of promise along with all those who were under the age of 18. This is the type of having to put off the old man and crucify the old nature in order to prevail in the church and on to eternal life, our promised land.
David was the King Priest who had the revelation of the law, what it meant and was a type of. He understood what the creatures were a type of, what the tabernacle meant and he used this understanding to worship God. His revelations kept him the king. His revelations caused him to prevail over his enemies because he knew what God required through understanding the types. He knew the creatures were types and used them frequently in his writings as allegory of the wicked.
Ps 34:10 Ps 35:17 Ps 57:4 Ps 58:6 Ps 104:21 Ps 58:4 Ps 140:3 Ps 7:2, 10:9, 17:12, 22:13, 91:13
Satan in the Old Testament was understood to be the evil spirit of man, produced from the heart.
Why didn’t God make provisions for fallen angels?
